HWC Completes Detailed Assessment of BF301 Belt Tensioning System
HWC technicians recently completed a comprehensive inspection of the BF301 belt tensioning system following reports of hydraulic oil leaks.
Using specialised height safety equipment and harnesses to access the crushing area, technicians conducted a detailed assessment of all three hydraulic control panels. The inspection identified significant wear and deterioration across the system, with multiple leaks, damaged components, and evidence of previous maintenance inconsistencies.
Key Findings
During the inspection, HWC technicians confirmed that all three belt tensioning control panels are in poor condition and require significant attention to ensure long-term reliability and safe operation.
A major finding was that the existing Bucher directional control valve has become obsolete and is no longer available in its original configuration. Any replacement solution will require a redesign of the associated hydraulic tubing and hose arrangements to accommodate the updated valve footprint.
The inspection also revealed inconsistencies between hydraulic cartridge valves installed across the belt feeder cabinets. While the system schematic specifies CSAD-XXN shuttle valves, some locations were found to contain CKCB-XCN valves. This variation suggests that non-standard components may have been installed during previous maintenance activities and further investigation is required to confirm the correct specification.
Components Identified During Inspection
The hydraulic system was found to comprise the following key components:
- Main Inlet Ball Valve (½” BSPP)
- Main Inlet Flow Control Valve (FDBA-LAN/GAU)
- Main Directional Control Valve (2-Spool Configuration, likely closed-centre with port relief valves)
- Two Shuttle Valves (CSAD-XXN)
- Two Needle Valves (NFCC-HCN)
- Two Relief Valves (RDDA-LAN)
- Pressure Gauge (100mm, 0-250 Bar, ½” BSPP)
Recommended Path Forward
Based on the condition assessment, HWC has recommended obtaining the original operator’s manual for the belt tensioning system to verify system specifications and configuration requirements.
In parallel, HWC will prepare a detailed proposal for a complete replacement hydraulic control panel. The proposed upgrade will include:
- A revised hydraulic schematic
- Updated component selection
- Full parts list
- Modernised hydraulic layout
- Replacement of obsolete equipment
- Improved maintainability and reliability
Commitment to Reliability
The inspection highlights the importance of proactive maintenance and system modernisation in critical material handling operations. By addressing obsolete components and restoring design consistency, the proposed upgrade will help improve operational reliability, reduce unplanned downtime, and support safer long-term operation of the BF301 belt tensioning system.
